paymark

who we are, what we do and how we do it

After operating for over 10 years as ETSL, in 2000 we introduced the Paymark brand as a sign of payment security and a visible representation of the stringent certification standards applied to our products and services.

Building on the infrastructure created to run EFTPOS nationally, we now deliver payment processing services to more than 50 card issuers and acquirers, and their customers. And this isn’t just within New Zealand.
As the world moves online, our eCommerce and mCommerce services offer our customers gateways to the global market.

With a wealth of experience firmly under our belt, Paymark is well positioned to meet whatever challenges the future may bring. We say this with confidence due to the calibre of our people. Their skills, technical proficiencies and commitment are the cornerstones of our business.

Social and technological developments are fast driving change across the payments sector, notably the introduction of chip-card technology, and the explosion of the internet. This will see the emergence of a number of micro and macro payment mechanisms. Customers are also beginning to demand more complex payment solutions that are an integrated part of their in-store point of sale. A high degree of compliance-driven mandates are making payment technologies a far more secure and reliable proposition than ever before.

At the forefront of these changes, Paymark is progressively rolling out new technology and services to help our customers operate with even more confidence in the future. This will ensure New Zealanders continue to enjoy the very best experience when paying for goods and services.

The New Zealand market and how we fit in

The Paymark brand is about safe, secure and reliable payment processing and our logo can be found wherever we process payments.

The Paymark EFTPOS service has become as common and expected as utilities such as water and electricity. In fact, New Zealanders have become so accustomed to paying electronically that 90% of us have a debit card, which we use to purchase goods and services at almost twice the rate per capita of anywhere else in the world.

The New Zealand retail industry employs 325,000 people and accounts for 20% of the national workforce. These people service over 49,000 retail outlets nationwide, most of which are owned independently. These outlets include shops, service stations, cafes & restaurants and car yards. When combined with our credit card processing volumes, Paymark is responsible for approximately 75% of all electronic transactions in New Zealand. Each transaction is processed in a matter of seconds and contributes to combined total annual retail sales of over NZ$65 billion.

In the last year alone Paymark processed over NZ$40 billion worth of these payments in New Zealand, equivalent to a signifi cant portion of New Zealand’s GDP. There is a 6% growth in transactions year-on-year in terms of the volume of payments, despite inflation running in low single digit fi gures.

Paymark’s infrastructure accommodates this sophisticated level of trading activity and continues to provide customers with a safe, secure and reliable way to pay for goods and services.

Despite being renowned for our EFTPOS network we are always looking at new ways that businesses can process their customer’s payments and extend their often unique product offerings to all of New Zealand and the rest of the world.

An overview of Paymark’s products and services

Our core transaction switching, processing and network infrastructure underpins the payment services we offer in the market – EFTPOS, ATM, eCommerce, mCommerce, gift and loyalty card management and reporting.

We operate multiple processing systems housed in different centres around New Zealand. These were built to the most rigorous security standards, which employ all the features you would expect of a world-class operation and operate in an industry leading ’continuous processing’ mode. This means that should individual components fail, the transaction processing system will always be available to customers.

Our systems operate using both New Zealand and Australian transaction messaging standards and offer support for all domestic debit and credit cards, as well as proprietary cards such as merchant gift and loyalty cards. There is a comprehensive compliance programme in place to ensure that our systems support the credit card scheme and regulatory requirements expected by our card issuer and acquirer customers.

Each year we continue to invest in core infrastructure to ensure we have the capacity to meet increasing customer demand for transaction processing. Attached to the network are over 100,000 EFTPOS terminals, over 300 ATMs, nearly 3,000 eCommerce merchants and approximately 25,000 consumers using the mobile top-up service.
